If you think that cybersecurity is not much of an issue to your company, think again!
Any company, regardless of its size, provides hackers with a treasure trove of sensitive data and assets to siphon off. More often than not, small businesses are an ideal target because there’s a higher chance they may have less security than large corporations. Hackers may also target small businesses in order to gain backdoor access to their bigger partners’ database.
So then you may ask, what questions about Cybersecurity should you ask to safeguard your company today?
Well, don’t worry, I got you covered.
Here are 5 questions you should ask to safeguard your company’s data and property!
1. Is my business Cybersecurity’s policy robust?
This term “robust” can be very subjective. What is “robust”? I mean, my definition of “robust” is probably different than your definition of “robust”. So what exactly is a robust cybersecurity policy?
Let me give you a guideline.
Your company’s cybersecurity system should comprise of a basic firewall & identity protection, anti-malware and anti-virus software.
There should also be constant monitoring of your system for any potential problems. Investment in the best cybersecurity program that you can reasonably afford is hence crucial to any business, big or small.
And while you are reviewing your security framework, consider the access to your network. Make sure that you are using the highest-level security available to you through your router and that you have a secure access point for your employees.
And if you do have a cybersecurity plan in place, review it with your IT department or Managed Service Provider (MSP) to make sure that it is thorough and up-to-date.
2. Are my employees adequately aware on Cybersecurity threats?
Let me just say this: A company is not a company without its employees.
(Unless of course if you are an entrepreneur – but even start-ups have a few people in it!)
So, it is inadequate to solely have a sound cybersecurity policy. Most often, employees are unaware of cyber risks and the consequences of cyber-attacks. There is a growing need to educate employees about threats and how to spot the different methods of cyber attacks that hackers adopt.
I mean, did you know that 90% of successful cybersecurity breaches are due to human error?
Therefore, it is highly important to train employees on good cyber security practices. Topics such as how to create a strong password and avoid hacking through phishing should be taught across the board so that everyone is able to secure their devices and avoid data breaches and loss of company assets.
Support should also be offered periodically so that your employees continue to stay up-to-date on emerging threats. In addition, it is crucial that you have the necessary tools to enforce your cybersecurity policy.
3. Are my employees’ mobile devices and personal computers secure?
If your company adopts a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policy, your cybersecurity policy should include guidelines for securing your employees’ devices and laptops. If your network is secure but the devices accessing it are not, you are at risk.
Another issue may be the security of remote work. Nowadays, cloud computing promotes greater convenience and interconnectedness as employees can work whenever and wherever they want. I mean, how often do you see people working in Starbucks or The Coffee Bean? This thus inevitably brings its own security concerns because using such unsecured home networks or public WiFi could make your systems vulnerable.
4. Is my business protected from future Cyber threats?
In this 21st century, we see new digital threats every day. With an exponential increase in users, devices and data generated, it provides an ideal breeding ground for more threats and vulnerabilities. Yet, the horde of cyber-attack attempts will only continue to increase as technology continues to advance.
So is your cybersecurity policy prepared for this technologically-advanced future?
If you took a minute too long to think about this question, that means you are either not sure or that your current policy is simply not prepared! It is thus crucial to ensure that your security system is continually scanning for breaches, updating itself with new software, and patching itself to protect against newly reported threats.
Equip your company with Business Continuity Measures as a contingency plan so that you have a backup in place in the event of a cyber-attack (touch wood!).
5. What can I do right now?
At this point in time, if you managed to get to the end of this article and your blood pressure is slowly going up as you start panicking, relax!
Just because you might not have a solid and robust cybersecurity program, or that your employees are not trained at all, does not mean you can’t start now!
So here’s a non-exhaustive checklist for you to do today:
Schedule a security audit on a regular basis
Talk to your IT department or Managed Service Provider (MSP) about reviewing and revising your cybersecurity policy
If you aren’t running a round-the-clock scan of your system, one that automatically updates and patches itself, set one up now
Provide relevant security awareness training for all your employees
